  8. What is VoiceBox?
  9. ====================
  10. VoiceBox is cdev/INIT that reads static texts in an alert box and/or a dialog box when it appears. Various parameters can be set on the Control Panel.

  14. VoiceBox requires MacinTalk speech driver.
  15.  
  16. How to use it
  17. ====================
  18. 1. Put "VoiceBox" into your System Folder. Make sure that MacinTalk is in your System Folder.

  20. 2. Install "VoiceBox toggle switch FKEY" with ResEdit or the equivalent. (FKey Manager, Suitcase II, etc.)

  22. 3. Restart your Macintosh.

  24. 4. Parameters that can be set on the Control Panel are as follows:

  26. • "Enabled" check box
  27. If this option is checked, VoiceBox always functions. You can turn this state with VoiceBox toggle switch FKEY. If you set volume of speaker to zero, VoiceBox doesn't read aloud.

  29. Note: This option dose NOT control installation of VoiceBox at start up time. If you wish to avoid installation of VoiceBox, apply any of these procedures:
  30.     1) At start up time, keep shift key holding down until cancel icon appears,
  31.     or 2) make void VoiceBox with init cdev or the equivalent,
  32.     or 3) take VoiceBox out of System Folder.

  34. • "Alert only" check box
  35. If this option is checked, VoiceBox reads only when an alert box appears. If this option is off, VoiceBox reads when an alert box appears and when a dialog box appears.

  37. • "Rate" scroll bar 
  38. Adjust speech rate. (unit: word/minute, range: from 85 to 425)
  39.  
  40. • "Pitch" scroll bar
  41. Adjust speech pitch. (unit: Hz, range: from 65 to 500)

  43. • "Mode" scroll bar
  44. Choose speech mode. (Natural or Robotic)
  45.  
  46. • "Hilite text" check box
  47. If this option is checked, VoiceBox hilites static text while VoiceBox reads it.

  49. Setting these parameters makes immediate effect. If VoiceBox isn't installed at start up time, VoiceBox displays a message "Restart to hear change" in the bottom of Control Panel window, and tells you must restart your Macintosh to use VoiceBox.

  51. Click title of VoiceBox to hear a voice applied current settings.

  53. When VoiceBox reads aloud, you may want to stop it. Press option key to stop speech.

  57. VoiceBox was developed with THINK C 4.0.1.  VoiceBox patches some toolbox traps at start up time as follows:

  65. VoiceBox occupies system heap about 2KB.

  69. VoiceBox is freeware, distributed freely except for a commercial purpose. You may give it to your friends as many as you wish. But, please attach this document.
